Next stop: Cedarburg

Another day trip we took while Laura and Mike were here was to Cedarburg, which holds a special place in their hearts because it was the place of their first date and there's a little spot along the river where they were engaged. [insert aww's]

So we walked around with Malcolm.

Window shopped for hats.

While Malcolm napped, we ate some yummy lunch and splurged on some chocolates.

But to avoid us all taking naps, we stopped at a coffee shop where Malcolm enjoyed only the cup.

A trip to Wollersheim winery

While Laura and Mike were in Wisconsin, we hopped in the car and headed to Wollersheim winery for a nice a day trip.
Before we did our wine tasting, we roamed through the gift shop. And were silly.

The weather was beautiful and our little lunch with wine was delicious.

Here, Malcolm had his first taste of peach.

And after the wine, we took in the vineyards and gardens. Malcolm loves nature and his mom. He expresses his love by grabbing.

Noah's Ark

Laura and Mike came to visit us in mid-August. Well, they came to visit Malcolm and stayed at our place. :)

We had lots of fun around Wisconsin taking day trips here and there with Laura and Mike. One of our trips landed us in Noah's Ark. Because nothing says summer in Wisconsin like the Dells.

Malcolm was a little indifferent about the water, but looks pretty cute in his swimmer diapers.

Mostly he spent the day under a shade umbrella and was a lounge-chair lizard with Papa.

Eventually the beach bum baby just tuned out all the noise and napped away the summer afternoon with Nonna.

Oooo, butterflies.

Malcolm and I joined Uncle Matt and the cousins to see the live butterfly exhibit at Olbrich Gardens.

We saw about 6 six different types of butterflies. But Malcolm seemed most interested in the giant carp.

Guess they were easier to focus on than the butterflies.

You must pass MN to get to SD

So now to get caught up on where we left off...On our journey from WI to SD we visited our dear friends Diane and Bruce and their family. And they got to meet Malcolm.

We also met their newest edition, James.

Whoops. This isn't James. This is Lex who demands much of the attention in the house.

This is James with Paul.
By saying they keep busy is a understatement. But they do their best in raising a Dallas Cowboy, a Super Hero, and a world traveler/movie director/musician who are currently all under the age of 5 and oh so cute.

6 Months: *Blink* and a month goes by

We've been a little lax on posting this month. For good reason: Life gets in the way of posting about life. But a blitz of posts about all that we've been up to will follow soon. In the meantime, here's an update to get caught up on Malcolm, now 6 months.

This past month he cut his first two teeth on the bottom. We miss the total gummy smiles for sure. But the two teeth are pretty cute. And they are as cute as they are sharp and bitey. We thought he was working on the top two as well, but those haven't appeared yet.

Malcolm is able to sit on his own. He tries, but can't quite get from lying down to sitting up by himself. And just because we sit him up, doesn't mean he'll stay there. He still tumbles over occasionally, both intentionally and unintentionally. And until he figures out how to crawl, he's mobile by rolling. He can make it across the room rolling.

He's expanding his vocabulary. The vocabulary of "gee" and "lalala." He's added coo's and babbles of more sounds. Sometimes we think they sound like "mamama" and "dadada," but it's not official. He especially likes to jabber to himself in the morning. Malcolm also can blow spit bubbles that drench his shirts. He seems to feel quite accomplished by this.

He's still a smiley, happy baby, but is becoming more reserved with smiles with people he doesn't know as well. He loves to interact with all kids and babies, especially his cousins.

He also seems to love the element of surprise. And there is a fine line between being surprised and being scared. If you can find the right amount to surprise him, he'll giggle and want more. If you overestimate that amount, he'll look at you terrified. If you underestimate that amount, he'll look away from you uninterested.

At times we'll notice Malcolm has such focused interest on a single object - a book, a tag on a blanket, or a picture. He can just about get his hands do what he wants them to do - grabbing at toys, holding our fingers, and rubbing his eyes.

He spends time just watching and absorbing everything that surrounds him. Malcolm's eyes are drawn to shadows and lights. Some of his favorite things to observe are cars. He loves to watch the traffic. He also likes to look out the window of our living room to see the neighborhood. The wind blowing through the leaves on the trees. The bees on the flowers. The chipmunks digging holes in our yard.

And even though life's been busy, it's been busy with more interactive time with Malcolm. He wants to know what we're doing and wants to be a part of that. It seems appropriate that since this last month John Hughes passed, we find ourselves living by the immortal words of Ferris Bueller: "Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

Easy Rider -- South Dakota edition

Last weekend, we packed into the family roadster and made the trip out to Mobridge, SD for my Grandpa Schlomer's 90th birthday party. Here are some nice scenery pics Erin took outside the car while we drove.

While Erin and I enjoyed the trip, Malcolm was much less excited by the view.

Actually, Malcolm did great over the whole drive. He did not get cranky at all until were about 10 minutes away from home after 24 hours total in the car. He only had to drive part of the way.

We had a great time hanging out in Mobridge, SD with family.

Malcolm Minute 8: Crazy Baby

Malcolm would just belly laugh anytime I would call him a "crazy baby." That lasted about two weeks. It's sorta wore off a little in this video. He isn't laughing quite as hard, but you'll get the idea.

Now, when I say it, he just gives me a smile that looks as though he's thinking, "Who's the crazy one? Not the baby."
